Commentary

The Messenger of Allah Almighty has been commanded in this verse that He should say to the people: I am the Messenger of Allah Almighty; Whose obedience has been ordered. Allah Almighty has sent Me by giving His Message toward His entire sensible creatures that I should convey them.

Sovereignty of Allah Almighty has been spread over all heavens and the earth. Adoration of any other than Allah Almighty is an utterly unreasonable act. He Alone is the God of all. In His hand is quickening/making alive and giving death. Therefore, the human beings should have full belief that only Allah Almighty is their Worshiped, God and the Deity.

Allah Almighty has chosen Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) as His Messenger and sent towards the mankind. He (God) has caused to know Him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) the path of improvement by means of Divine Revelation for the guidance of humankind.

First duty of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is that He has perfect belief in Allah Almighty Himself and believes that Divine Revelation of Allah Almighty, His Scriptures, sent before Him and Qur’an, Which has been revealed on Him, all are aright.

We, all human beings should follow the Sayings of God’s Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). It is the only way that we can find the Guidance by this means.

After that, it is commanded that certainly some such people exist is the Jews who like the Truth and guide others to go on the Straight Path and establish justice. It aims AbdUllah bin Salaam etc. who was Jew but embraced Islam. Moreover, those all Jews are included in it, who choose true teachings of Islam giving up religious persecution until the Day of Resurrection.

Belief in the Apostle

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

157b.  Then those who believe in Him, and honour Him, and help Him, and follow the Light which is sent down with Him; they are the successful.
157b.  Fallaziina  ‘aamanuu  bi-hii  wa  ‘azza-ruuhu  wa  nasa-ruuhu  wattaba-‘un-Nuural-laziii  ‘unzila  ma-‘ahuuu,  ‘ulaaa-‘ika  humul-Muf-lihuun.

Commentary

‘Azza-ruuhu – (honored him), it is a past tense. Origin of this word is ta’-ziir, which has been derived from ‘azara. ‘Azara means “shelter, strength”. Ta’-ziir means “to make someone strong, to strengthen, to protect and support anyone by considering that he is great.

‘An-Nuuru – (the Light), here it aims Divine Revelation, inspiration, in which, Holy Qur’an and the entire Sayings (‘Ahaadith) of the last Messenger of Allah Almighty; Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) are included.

‘Al-Muf-lihuun – this word has come at various places in the Holy Qur’-an. Its origin is falaah, which means agriculture and its production. A word ‘aflaah has been derived from it also, which means “reaping advantage fully by cultivating; to get full production. Here it aims “to succeed”.

Summary of all previous things has been given in this part of the verse. At first, it was told: The essence of the Guidelines of God’s last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is that He enjoins on the people that which is right and forbids them that which is wrong. And He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) makes lawful for them all fine, pure and advantageous things for eating and drinking, and prohibits for them only the foul i.e. impure, pernicious, filthy and stinking things; that use of those is unlawful. Which commands were burden, difficult, rigorous and like fetters in the earlier religions, He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) replaced them and made easy and simple as a relief for the people.

He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) did not command for these all concessions at His own, but this entire is by means of Divine Revelations because He personally does know neither reading and nor writing. Whatever He says, is taught by Allah Almighty. While situation is like this; that; whatever He says, is good, then what did the result come out?

It has been commanded in this verse that this result comes out by bringing all together which has been described above, that; those people who will accept the Sayings of this Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and believe in it that He is true, they will protect Him, support Him, honor Him and help Him wholeheartedly. And they will act according to those Instructions which He has (taught Him by means of Divine Revelation). No doubt that the success will kiss their feet and they will gain victory in every field of life and the Hereafter.

It is found from this verse clearly that Islam is not partial of any particular group, sect or class. It is biased of its principles only. And it takes responsibility of success, salvation and victory in this world and the Hereafter for them who follow its instructions.

Accordingly, which, Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) was supplicating for His nation’s highest degree, bowed His head before this decision of Allah Almighty and instructed to the Children of Israel that they should act upon these principles and  cooperate with the Last Messenger of Allah Almighty, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him).

157a.  Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them; he enjoins on them that which is right and forbids them that which is wrong and he makes lawful for them all good things and prohibits for them only the foul; and he relieves them of their burden and the fetters that they used to wear.
157a.  ‘Allaziina  yattabi-‘uunar-Rasuulan-Nabiyyal-‘Ummiyyallazii  yajiduunahuu  maktuuban  ‘indahum  fit-Taw-raati  wal-‘Injiil.  Ya’-muruhum  bil-ma’-ruufi  wa  yan-haahum  ‘anil-munkari  wa  yuhillu  lahumut-tayyi-baati  wa  yuharri-mu  ‘alayhimul-khabaaa-‘isa  wa  yaza-‘u  ‘anhum  ‘israhum  wal-‘aglaa-lallatii  kaanat  ‘alayhim.

Commentary

‘Al-‘Ummiyyi – it is a betrothed noun, which can be betrothed towards three things: ‘Ummun (the Mother), ‘Ummul-Quraa (Mecca, Makkah) and ‘Ummah (the Nation).

‘Ummun (the Mother) – according to this meaning, it aims that “Exactly the same; as born from the womb”, that is to say; neither learned from anyone, nor read and nor can write.

‘Ummul-quraa (Mecca, Makkah) – Resident of Makkah,

‘Ummah (the Nation) – As Illiterate, as the other common people of Arab were.

It was described in the previous verse that only those people deserve the particular Mercy of Allah Almighty who fear God Almighty and ward off evil, who are liberal and believe in Allah Almighty. In this verse, another attribute of those people have been mentioned, which must be in them.

It is commanded that another condition along with the above is that: they should follow the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), Who neither can read nor write but the Prophet, mention of Which exists in their Scriptures i.e. Torah and Gospel. And they should follow whatever He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) say to them.

This Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) enjoins on them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong and commands them that; all good things are lawful for them, so they should eat and drink them, but they should keep themselves away from those things; which are impure, foul and stinking. And He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) sets up for them convenient methods by removing stringent restrictions.

Obviously, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is such Messenger that, Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) supplicated that His nation should be given highest degree in the world and the Hereafter. Allah Almighty said in response: They should fear Allah, ward off evils, be generous and believers, and they should obey the Sayings of last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) when He will come in the world, because dignity of both worlds (this world and the Hereafter) has been specified for them only who will follow the Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and recognize Him from those Signs which will be revealed with His Teachings.

Commentary

Allah Almighty commanded to Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) after hearing His supplication: My wrath and My Mercy is not specified for any particular nation, class, sect, tribe or community. Its concern is with personal deeds of every individual.

Mercy is for everyone and every time in any form, but punishment is only for those people whose acts become worst entirely. Anguish is not subdued upon anyone at every time. However, My Mercy embraces every creature at every time.

Moreover, as You (Moses – peace be upon Him) wish for Your nation i.e. the Children of Israel, that they should remain superior to all other people in the world as well as in the Hereafter and gain the respect of both worlds, so We have specified this Mercy for only those people who try to abstain from ill-deeds having fear of Allah Almighty, who pay some portion of their wealth to the needy and poor people (poor-due and alms), and who know Us (God Almighty) by reciting Our Revelations and observing Our Tokens and believe; that aim of Allah Almighty to manifest the Revelations and Token is; that the mankind should recognize Him. Human being should accept Him Creator, Lord and Master of own and entire creatures.

It found that existence of anything in the world is not possible without His (God’s) common Mercy, whereas, the special Mercy, which means goodness of both worlds, superiority and respect of this world and the Hereafter, that is only for the human being, but it is specified with some conditions, some of which are as under:

·       Being saved from the evil deeds. It means that movements like animals, that is to say; jumping, merry-making, fighting, wandering uncontrolled and freely, eating and drinking like the cattle, fulfilling the desire, takes the humankind away from specific Mercy of Allah Almighty.

·       Hoarding not the wealth, but paying out from it a portion for the poor and helpless people. It aims that ambition of the wealth is basis of disgrace and misery.

·       Recognizing Allah Almighty by listening to His Revelations and viewing His Signs and believing in Him. Without belief in Allah Almighty, human being cannot attain peace.

Commentary

Hudnaaa – (we have turned), it is past tense, origin of which is Hawd. Hawd means “to turn easily unto any matter or thing. Another word Hawaadatun has been derived from it, which is used commonly in Arabic language, and which means “friendship, reconciliation and turning unto someone immediately”.

Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) supplicated in His prayer: O my Lord! If You had willed You had destroyed them along with Me (all of us) long before. And none of us had any courage to come here, but You regarded us with Kindness and I presented myself in Your Court with Your permission, with bringing those people along.

Will You destroy all of them now for the reason that some ignorant people from them have questioned for which they had not ability? This calamity is a trial from You. You sent down this mishap upon them and only You are; Who can help them, so that they may come out from this trouble, and they may be enriched with the blessing of Belief.

You can send astray by means of any ill-deed; whom You will, and guide unto the Straight Path; whom You will. Only You are our Protecting Friend, Guardian and Lord. You have complete control over us. Therefore, kindly forgive our mistakes and have mercy on us. You are real and actual Master of us all. Settle for us and give us chance of earning good name, honor and overcoming, and we may attain degree and respect on the Day of Resurrection also.

Supplication of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) was accepted. Fault of those people was forgiven; they returned to conscious and rose again.

Commentary

Nus-khatihaa – this word is from nasakha, which means “to inscribe, to write”. The word Nuskhah is from it also which means “a written thing, an inscription, a recipe”.

Punishment of those who did worship of calf, was described in the previous verse. Along with it, repenting according to the prescribed method was proposed for them as a source of deliverance.

After that, circumstances in respect of Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) are being described again from this verse. It is commanded that when the anger of Moses (peace be upon Him) abated and the wroth had gone, He took up the tablets of Torah, which He had cast down. Those commands, which were written on those tablets, were very useful words of the Lord of believers.

This token of those who believe in Lord Almighty has been described in the verse that they fear God Almighty and in every matter, at first, they bear in mind that He should not be displeased from them. Truly, if someone has belief that: that entire is from God Almighty, whatsoever I have been receiving. There is no one other who may give this all. My life is established because He looks after me every time. While, whenever and whichever is necessary for my living and for making my condition graceful, He provides immediately, then how can I displease such Protector, a Kind Friend and Benefactor ever? I must fear Him (Allah Almighty) every time because if He withdrew His attention from me, then what shall I do? Then I shall be of nowhere. The word yarhabuun in the verse, has the same meaning that such people try their best to keep Him pleased every moment.

That happening has been mentioned in the verse after it which has been explained in Surah Baqarah (Chapter – 2), that the Children of Israel said: O Moses (peace be upon Him)! We shall believe in Allah Almighty at that time, when we shall hear His Voice with our own ears.

At the appointed time, Prophet Moses (peace be upon Him) chose seventy men from the Children of Israel and brought them on the mountain Sinai. When they insisted to see Allah Almighty, the lightning fell down, the trembling came on them and then they were immobilized like the dead.
