Quran Chapter 7 – 74 (Pt-8, Stg-2) (L-978) - درس قرآن

Dwellings in the mountains

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

74.  And remember how He made you viceroys after ‘Aad and gave you station in the earth; ye construct castles in the plains and hew the mountains into dwellings. So remember (all) the bounties of Allah and do no evil, making mischief in the earth.
74.  Waz-kuruuu  ‘iz  ja-‘alakum  khula-faaa-‘a  mim-  ba’di  ‘Aadinw-wa  bawwa-‘akum  fil-‘arzi  tatta-khizuuna  min-  suhuu-lihaa  qusuu-ranw-wa  tan-hituunal  jibaala  buyuutaa.  Faz-kuruuu  ‘aalaaa-‘Allaahi  wa  laa  ta’-saw  fil- ‘arzi  mufsidiin.

Commentary
Bawwa-‘a – (gave station), it is past tense. The origin of this word is tab-wi-‘atun and its origin is bawa-‘un. Bawa-‘un means “to come back, to return”. Mabaaa-‘atun means “place of return, residence, abode, nest”. Tab-wi-‘atun means “to provide accommodation, to settle”.

Suhuu-lun – (the plains, soft places), it is plural of sahal. The plain of soft mud is called sahal.

Qusuu-run – (castles, palaces, mansions, big buildings), this word is plural of qasr. Qasr is a place of dwelling, which is constructed at height by stones, blocks or bricks plus lime and mud etc.

Tan-hituuna – (hew, hack, cut), it is from tanhatun, which means “hewing the stones by cutting/scratching out and making something from it”.

Laa  ta’-saw – (do not evil), it is a negative tense, which has been derived from ‘asa-wun‘Asa-wun means “to ruin or damage the things recklessly, to mar a concocted plot, to ruin the peace of the people. ‘Asa-wun is severe form of mischief.

It is commanded that Prophet Salih (peace be upon Him) said to His nation: Think about your condition. The people of ‘Aad have passed over before you. Now you have taken their place after them. Who has bestowed to you this wealth, power and easy circumstances? This entire has been given to you by the Grace of that, One God, Who had given all these things to the tribe of ‘Aad. You construct big, pompous and high castles in the plains and make safe houses by hewing the mountains, so that, you may take shelter into them during seasonal changes, cold, dust and rainy storms etc. While Allah Almighty has bestowed to you so much strength, health, wealth and equipage, then it is the only condition of justice that you should be thankful to Him and bring the things into use in accord with His Command. This is not for the purpose that you begin to deprive the rights of needy and poor people, and disregard others due to presumptuous ideas being rich, and put the people in trouble so that they may not live peacefully, and mind your own business to fill your own home, and spread the fear among people greatly by killing, ruining the people and cracking down, and make the people own slaves and bond women by seizing for personal service and comfort, appoint them for hard labor and enjoy your life with their earnings, and compel them to work like animals after putting some food before them, and keep them ensnared every time like an ox of any oil-press.

Painful torment

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

73.  And to (the tribe of) Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih. He said: O my people! Serve Allah, ye have no other God save Him. A wonder from your Lord hath come unto you. Lo! This is the she-camel of Allah, a token unto you; so let her feed in Allah’s earth, and touch her not with hurt lest painful torment seize you.
73.  Wa  ‘ilaa  Samuuda  ‘akhaahum  Saalihaa.  Qaala  yaa-qawmi’-budUllaaha  maa  lakum-min  ‘ilaahin  gay-ruH.  Qad  jaaa-‘at-kum-  Bayyi-natum-mir-Rabbikum.  Haazihii  Naaqa-tUllaahi  lakum  ‘Aayatan-  fazaruuhaa  ta’-kul  fiii  ‘arzIllaahi  wa  laa  tamas-suuhaa  bi-suuu-‘in-  fa-ya’-khuzakum  ‘azaabun  ‘aliim.

Commentary
Samuuda – it is name of a nation, which lived in that central area between Yemen and Hejaz, name of which is Hajar. After the destruction of the tribe ‘Aad, prosperity was acquired by this nation. These people were of strong stature, tall and healthy also like the people of ‘Aad. And those entire evils had been spread into them too, which exist in the proud of power.

Saaliha – He (Salih) (peace be upon Him) was a good-natured individual of the same nation (Thamud). Allah Almighty chose Him as His Messenger and appointed Him to admonish the people of Thamud.

Naaqa-tUllaahi – (she-camel of Allah), Prophet Salih (peace be upon Him) caused to understand His nation that it is not good to pride on wealth, community, stature or equipage. He (peace be upon Him) said to them: Allah Almighty has forbidden you from insolence, idol-worship and keeping on fulfilling the personal desires like animals. And He has determined rules for your dwelling in the world like human beings. His (peace be upon Him) people mocked after hearing His words and said: If a she-camel will come out from interior portion of this mount in front of us, and immediately after coming out a baby-camel is born from it of the same height, then we can listen to you. Prophet Salih (peace be upon Him) prayed for it in the Court of Allah Almighty and the she-camel came out from the mountain, and before them she delivered a baby camel, which was like herself. Prophet Salih (peace be upon Him) named it Naaqa-tUllaahi.

It is commanded by God Almighty: We sent a Man {Salih (peace be upon Him)} towards the nation of Thamud, Who was from their relationship, to admonish them. He (peace be upon Him) caused to know them that they should worship Allah. Save Him there is none worthy of worship for anyone. He (peace be upon Him) said: the token, which you wished, Allah Almighty has sent. Now there should be no reason of any doubt to you in My Sayings. That token is this she-camel, which has come out from the mountain with the Omnipotence of Allah Almighty before you. Let her feed in the land freely. Behold! Touch her not with hurt. Allah Almighty has entrusted her to you. Your safety is in her safety. If you afflicted her, it would not be well for you. You would be punished very severely.

Misfortunes of the world

Chapter ‘Al-‘A’raaf (The Heights) – Surah – 7)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

72.  So We saved him and those with him by a mercy from Us, and We cut the root of those who denied Our Revelations and were not believers.
72.  Fa-‘anjay-Naahu  wallaziina  ma-‘ahuu  bi-rahmatim-min-Naa  wa  qata’-Naa  daabi-ral-laziina  kazzabuu  bi-‘Aayaati-Naa  wa  maa  kaanuu  Mu’-miniin.

Commentary
It is commanded that when the people of ‘Aad did not obey their Messenger Hud (peace be upon Him), then that disaster, which had to come, came at its prescribed time. Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) and those who obeyed Him, were saved. Remaining entire people were ruined.

Allah Almighty says: We kept Hud (peace be upon Him) protected and those with Him by a mercy from Us, from that disaster. But those people who did neither use to believe in Our Tokens and Revelations beholding them obviously and nor accept Us as their Worshipped, and they were involved in polytheism (belief in a plurality of God), therefore, We cut their root.

Some one or other misfortune use to come in the world usually. Some of them are ordinary, whereas, some are alarming. Dust, storms and earthquakes etc. are customary, which occur due to mutual pulling and taking away by natural forces. If the human being does not arrange to be saved from those calamities before time, then he is annihilated entirely after coming in their entanglement like lifeless things.

We have come to know from it that it is incumbent for the humankind that he should adopt practical managements for being saved from the disasters. Holy Qur’an explains that production of horrible accidents is necessary due to either gravitational collision of natural forces or mutual amalgamation into one another with a specific manner.

Along with it, the prudent people use to admonish the human beings; the ways “how to be safe and sound from them” from time to time. But from them; matured talk is of those individuals, who are called Messengers (peace be upon Them). Their first duty is that they strengthen the heart of the mankind, so that it should not be confounded at the time of any calamity. They (peace be upon Them) say: Believing in Allah Almighty and having complete faith in His Mercy is the actual thing.

That individual who do not have trust in Allah Almighty and is deprived of the Belief and the Faith, and instead of it; he has trust in his own strength, own people, companions, buildings, fortresses and weapons etc. (apparent equipment and property etc.), and do not act upon the advice and guidance of the Messengers (peace be upon Them), neither can he be saved from oppressive worldly mishaps and nor can he remain in peace after death. It is known obvious from this detail that personal evil deeds of the human being, which are not according to the Guidance of the Messengers (peace be upon Them), make him victim of the disasters. And because he is debarred from the satisfaction of the heart; being a disbeliever, so even he will never enjoy the ease of the Doomsday.

Main object of learning the lesson from the circumstances of earlier nations, which Holy Qur’an explains before us, is that the mankind can be saved from the disasters of the world and the doom at the time of death, when he will follow the Guidance of the Messengers (peace be upon Them) of his own life time as now Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) is the last Messenger until the Day of Resurrection. Except it; there is no other form of escaping.

Commentary
Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) explained before His nation everything and every way, and caused to draw their attention towards the matter that they should keep in view that they were healthy and strong. They possessed everything in sufficient quantity to fulfill the necessities of their life. They were of very fine stature and most powerful, even that nothing was deficient for them.

Can your gods; that is to say idols; give you existing health and comfort, which have been made of mud and stones? If someone desires to break them, certainly those will be broken without any resistance. Listen to Me. These all things (strength, stature and sound health) have been given to you by Allah Almighty. And in fact He has actual Power and Omnipotence. If you will name any lifeless thing as god, that is nothing.

His (peace be upon Him) nation did not hear His word and said to Him these words: We cannot worship One Unseen Worshipped leaving the gods of ancestors. If You threaten us from the wrath then you should go and bring Your wrath. We want to see; what kind of wrath do You bring.

It is commanded that Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) said to them: Uncountable powers have been doing their work in the world. Great guns (dust storms) use to blow; water-storms and earthquakes use to come. Accordingly, a very hard dust storm is coming very soon in the world. It seems from your refusal that you will undergo that disaster.

I say to you that your heathenism and obstinacy is a token of this matter that your Lord has decided to ruin and entangle you in this wrath and torment. There is no end of this silliness that you make an idol with your own hands and then say: It is our god who gives us food, health, wealth and property etc. Will these statues become really as you or your fathers have named them and as you say?

Allah Almighty has not revealed any such warrant or proof, even then you bring those idols opposite to God Almighty, fixing their names and worship them. And that, I prevent you from this foolishness, on the contrary you quarrel with Me {Hud (peace be upon Him)}, patronizing them.

You are unable to understand that Allah Almighty is the most Powerful and Omnipotent, whereas these idols of yours are toys of mud and stone. Why do you not understand this very little and common thing and have gotten ready to suffer the wrath? Certainly the wrath will come if your condition is not changed. Await it and I await also, but I am sure that my Lord will save Me (peace be upon Him) from that wrath.

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

70.  They said: Hast thou come unto us that we should serve Allah alone, and forsake what our fathers worshipped? Then bring up us that wherewith thou threatenest us if thou art of the truthful!
69b.  Waz-kuruuu  ‘iz  ja-‘Ala-kum  khulafaaa-‘a  mim-  ba’-di  qawmi  Nuuhinw-wa  zaadakum  fil  khalqi  bastah.  Faz-kuruuu  ‘aalaaa-‘Allaahi  la-‘allakum  tufli-huun.

70.  Qaaluuu  ‘aji’-tanaa  lina’-budAllaaha  wahdaHuu  wa  nazara  maa  kaana  ya’-budu  ‘aabaaa-‘unaa.  Fa’-tinaa  bimaa  ta-‘idunaaa  ‘in  kunta  minas-saadiqiin.

Commentary
Khulafaaa-‘a – (viceroys, deputies, successors), this word is plural of Khaliifah, which has been discussed earlier many times. It has been derived from khalafa, which means “to be a successor”, and it is a sign of respect. Therefore it has been translated as “a Chief, a sovereign or a ring-leader”.

Bastatan – (expansion, extant), we have recited this word in Chapter two (Surah ‘al-Baqarah). It means “expansion in breadth, width, length and height”.

‘Aalaaa-‘u – (bounties), it is a tense of plural and its singular is ‘ilaa or ‘alaa, which means “bounty, kindness, favor and grace”.

Ta-‘idu – (thou promise, threaten or give good news), this word is from wa’-dun, which means “to say to someone: you will be given such a thing or so and so – good or bad”.

Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) teaches His nation in this verse, an easy way of: How to know your Creator (God Almighty) and how to obey His Commands. And in fact, there is Guidance in this answer regarding The Unity (Oneness of God) for the entire human beings of every era. And Holy Qur’an has established it in the world for ever in the course of remembrance in respect of Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him).

It is commanded that Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) said to His nation: Remember it that the people of Noah (peace be upon Him) before you, were most powerful in the world. You have been appointed by Allah Almighty today as viceroys of the earth at their place, giving you the same power and honor. Moreover, He has bestowed you more growth of stature, more powerful brain and body than that nation.

Think for a moment! Who has bestowed upon you these bounties and superiority, which you have been enjoying? Its correct reply is that these all powers have been given by The Creator of the Worlds. The Secret of prosperity and success of the mankind is hidden only in its acceptance.

The nation of Hud (peace be upon Him) said after hearing His words: O Hud! Have you come unto us to say only this that we should worship Allah Almighty Alone, forsaking and giving up the worship of those, of whom our ancestors used to worship? It is not possible for us. Bring up that from which wrath you threaten us, if you are true, we are ready to face. We shall never obey your sayings. Do whatsoever you wish to do.

Commentary
The people of the folk of ’Aad  accused Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) with two charges:

1.    That is not a matter of common sense, whichever you say. Near to them, it was against the common sense that any such a program is produced against those customs and traditions, which have been established since long.

2.    If anyone is entirely separate from all other people, he should tell about that matter, which should be easy for believing that it is the truth. Otherwise, only claim without proof is able to be considered as a lie.

Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) answers to these charges. It is commanded that Hud (peace be upon Him) said: As you say to Me a foolish due to the reason that I tell you about most strange matter, listen to Me! I do not say anything from Me side (at my own), but I have brought the Message of that Eternal Existent, Who is Lord of the entire Worlds, for deliverance unto you, He has appointed Me as a Messenger. It were foolishness, if I had told you such thing which I would have invented any new thing myself for my own purpose and then conveyed it to you. And in the matter, in which, you consider Me a liar, is not correct, because I was and am your well-wisher always, and I say to you only that command, in which, I see your Good. And even I explain that I have never deceived you, nor committed any kind of treacherousness, dishonesty or fraud with you. You trusted in Me always. While you know that I am not habitual of cheating you and fulfilling My desire, then why are you doubtful in this matter that I am deceiving you by telling a lie? Do you marvel that your Lord selects a man from your own folk, reminds you your forgotten promises by means of that man (Messenger – peace be upon Him) and warns you by obeying His (your Lord’s) Commands that you should get ready to be saved from the wrath of Allah Almighty, otherwise there will be no shelter for inattentive and careless people after arrival of the wrath and neither there will be any individual, who may save you. Only those people are saved who pass their life in accordance with the Guidance of Allah Almighty.

The people of ‘Aad tribe used nearly those words for Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) too, which were used by the nation of Noah for Prophet Noah (peace be upon Him). And the same answers almost have been described by Hud (peace be upon Him) which were of Noah (peace be upon Him). Moreover, till to date, the same objections are urged upon the Messengers and Prophets (peace be upon Them), whereas the replies of those objections are also the same as those were during those periods.

Commentary
‘Aadin – it is the name of a very strong and powerful nation. These people were children of Iram, who was grandson of Prophet Noah (peace be upon Him). They lived in Ahqaaf, which was a territory of Yemen.

Huudun – (Hud), He was Prophet of Allah Almighty (peace be upon Him), from the children of Iram. Therefore, He is ancestral Brother of ‘Aad (a folk).

The people of ‘Aad were very mischievous and quarrelsome. They were physically very strong and tall, and used to oppress the feeble persons, engage them in hard labor and treat them like their slaves, and consider them like animals.

Prophet Hud (peace be upon Him) caused to understand them that it was useless to strut too much on own strong body and height. He said: Allah Almighty is more Powerful and Strong than you, Who brought you into being.

Worshiping the idols had become prevalent among those people and there was a separate demi-god for every work; someone was of the wealth, some others like power, honor and respect, gladness, health and cure etc.

Hud (peace be upon Him) admonished them: That entire has been given to you by Allah Almighty, whichever you possess. Therefore you should worship Him only. You should consider the weak and feeble people as mankind like you and not to molest them. But they were proud of their wealth and physical strength. They did not obey Him (peace be upon Him).

It is commanded by Allah Almighty: We appointed Hud (peace be upon Him) for the people of ‘Aad as Our Prophet to admonish them and to cause to mend their manners. He (peace be upon Him) said to them: You should abstain from worshiping idols. Those entire things which you possess i.e. wealth, health, strength and honor etc. have been bestowed to you by only One “Allah Almighty”. None other is able to give you anything. These demi-gods, whom you worship, neither they have any authority and nor omnipotence. It can be nothing by naming the lifeless things. None is worthy of worship for any individual except Allah Almighty. So you should worship only Him. Fall prostrate before Him only. Beg from Him and give thanks to Him only. Do you not wish to be saved from evil? Why do you disobey your Lord? Do you not fear His wrath?

When the people of ‘Aad heard this talk, their chieftains, by whom the tradition of worshiping idols was established, replied: O Hud! We see that Thou art entirely foolish because Thou desire to finish an established system of customs and traditions, and wish to establish a new and uncommon system. This matter, which Thou art going to produce, seems a lie entirely.
