Commentary

‘Illaaa  ‘azaa – (save a trifling hurt) it means that the Jews will either abuse, or reproach with their tongues or will cause any other trifling hurt. They can not harm you more than this.

Allah Almighty commanded to the People of the Scripture in this verse, “If you had believed, it was better for you, like this you also could join the khayral  ‘ummam  (the best of the communities). You would be honored in the world and got reward in the Hereafter. But Alas! None of them accepted Islam besides a few persons {for example Abdullah bin Salaam or Negus (the Emperor of Abyssinia) etc}. Despite becoming the truth obvious, they stuck disobedience.

Most people of them are disobedient. Allah Almighty says, “O Muslims! You must not be afraid due to looking either their more manpower strength or materially arms and equipment”. It is promise by Allah that these disobedient will not harm you on the condition that you prove yourself the best of nations in right meanings. These people at most can just abuse with tongue, or say you bad things or cause trifling hurt. They neither can overcome you, nor can cause you any big trouble. Be sure that if they would fight against you, they will turn and flee and they will not get any help. They will be disgraced by defeating.

This foretelling of Holy Qur’an became exactly true. During the times of Companions of Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) the People of the Scripture congregate like this. They tried hard for destruction of Islam and Muslims but could not harm Muslims. Wherever they competed, ran away after defeat. And at every occasion Allah Almighty helped the Muslims.
