Commentary
The
Christians of Syria (Najraan), who
came to argue and debate with the Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings
and peace be upon him), presented their entire false beliefs. Allah Almighty
replied them by means of Holy Qur’an
and silenced them.
Even
after hearing the clear proofs, those Christians of Najraan did not believe in it and remained firm on their false
faith. Allah Almighty commanded to His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and
peace be upon him) for establishing Mubaahilah
(accusing each other) with them (both groups would have to get together with
their families and pray with humble that whosoever from us is liar, invocation
would be prayed for his curse and the wrath of God). At its first step, this
situation of Mubaahilah will clarify
that which the group has really believed in his inner truth and up to which
extent. Hearing the invitation of Mubaahilah,
the group from Syria (the Christians of Najraan) requested for respite so that
they should answer after consultation. When they got together for consultation,
then wise persons from them said, “You people have understood in your hearts
that Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is really a Messenger
of God Almighty. He has described clear and decisive words about Prophet Jesus
(peace be upon him), and you also know that Allah Almighty had promised to send
His Messenger from the children of Ishmael, and it is possible that He
(Muhammad) (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) may be that same
Messenger. Setting up the Mubaahilah (accusing
each other) against any Messenger, can result that none of them (whether those
are younger or elder) could be saved from destruction and torment.
After consulting, Syrians (Najraani Christians) attended the court
of last Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). They saw that
the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)
was coming out with Hassan and Hussain (His daughter’s sons), Fatimah (his daughter) and Ali (his son
in law) (may God be pleased with them). Looking upon these luminous faces,
their superior Clergyman said, “I am looking such pure faces whose prayer can
shake the mountains from their places. Do not ruin yourselves by fixing the Mubaahilah with them.” At last, they decided
that they should not to compete. So they returned after reconciling. It has
been mentioned in ‘Ahaadith (the
Sayings) that the Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace
be upon him) said, “If those people would have done Mubaahilah (accusing each other), then it would rain such fire upon
them that Allah Almighty would subvert the Syria (Najraan).
