71a. Say: shall we cry, instead of unto Allah, unto that
which neither profiteth us nor hurteth us, and shall we turn back
after Allah hath guided us, like one bewildeth, whom the
devils have infatuated in the earth, who hath companions who invite him to
the guidance (saying): Come unto us?

Commentary
‘A’-qaabun –
this word is plural of “’Aqab”, which means “Heel”.
‘As-tahwat –
it is past tense, which has been derived from ‘is-tahwaaa’, which
means “to mislead, to infatuate”.
‘Ash-shayaa-tiin –
it is plural of Shaytaan (Satan), the devil. It aims “those
evil spirits, who are called “ignis, ghost, demon etc. which are unseen
but can be felt by other means”.
It is commanded that the
Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) should say to the
disbelievers: Do you want from us that we should worship and cry unto the stones,
the trees etc. and forsake Allah Almighty, whereas you know that
neither those can profit us and nor hurt? Do you wish to turn us back,
while Allah Almighty has guided and led us towards the Straight Path?
Certainly we shall never turn away from that Guidance.
Allah Almighty says: Ask
them! What is your opinion about that person, who is going on the Straight Path
along with his well-wishers, lovers, beloveds, friends and companions, but the
mischievous, selfish, tyrant devils cause to desert him from his associates by
pointing him out, and leave him bewildered in the forest? Now he has been
rambling hither and thither senseless due to the influence of evil spirits.
Sometimes he rushes toward a thing and the other time he runs toward any other
thing. His friends and companions are calling him with sympathy and say: If you
will come unto us, you will be set free from these confusions. But he is under
the control of astray devils and unable to hear the voice of his own people? If
we shall give up Islam now, then our condition will be totally the same as that
person.
We should
learn from this verse that we should not be separated from the Way of True
Muslims due to tempt by evil desires. Otherwise, we shall gain nothing except
distress and confusion. And even the voice of our well-wisher friends will not
reach our ears, because the desires make a man blind and deaf, and leave him
alone bewildered.
