A deceptive provision of vanity - Quran Chapter 3- 185 (Pt-4, Stg-1) (L-495) - درس قرآن

Quran Chapter 3- 185 (Pt-4, Stg-1) (L-495) - درس قرآن

A deceptive provision of vanity

Surah ‘Aali-‘Im-raan (The Family of ‘Imran) – Chptr – 3)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

185.  Every soul will taste of death. And ye will be paid on the Day of Resurrection only that which ye have fairly earned. Whoso is removed from the Fire and is made to enter Paradise, he indeed is triumphant. And the life of this world is nothing but a deceptive provision of vanity.
185.  Kullu  nafsin-  zaaa-‘iqatul- mawt.  Wa  ‘innamaa  tu-waffaw-na  ‘ujuurakum  Yawmal-Qiyaamah.  Faman-  zuhziha  ‘aninnaari  wa  ‘ud-khilal-Jannata  faqad  faaz.  Wa  mal-hayaa-tuddun-yaaa  ‘illaa  mataa-‘ul-guruur.

Commentary

The reality has been manifested in this verse that every living being and soul would have to taste of death one or the other day. The creature, which is born once in the world, mortality/death is compulsory for that. Permanence is not for any existence but Allah Almighty. Although this truth has been cleared earlier, but here it is being mentioned particularly for those people who hold fondly their wealth in their arms instead of spending it in the Way of Allah Almighty and collect it heaps over heaps. When they will taste of death, their entire wealth and property, gold, silver and money will be dropped down here, in this world and they will be buried in to their graves empty-handed. Neither their wealth can postpone their death, nor can it keep them away from the severe bodily suffering in their graves. Therefore, they should keep the love with Allah’s creature, leaving the love of wealth.

Mataa-‘ul-guruur – (a deceptive provision of vanity). Mataa means provisions, property, real capital, funds etc. guruur means deceptive, alluring. The person, who is boaster, is called proud or arrogant because he is involved in deception about himself. He imagines something better about himself, which actually he is not.

Temporary spring and pleasantness of life are the things of imposture. Many ignorant people forget their future (the Day of Resurrection) due to exciting beauties and apparent decoration, and make their aim of life only to this world. They wish to get provisions and wealth from each source whether that is lawful or unlawful. Selfishness, greed and sensuality become their habit. They consider that success of this world is perhaps real success, whereas actual success of mankind is to escape from the anguish of Allah Almighty and to get the delight (Paradise). No success can be gotten by remaining out from the Paradise. Good working, worship of Allah Almighty and sacrifice make a man deserving of the Paradise.

Commentary

Qurbaanin – (an offering, a sacrifice), during the ancient times, some Messengers (peace be upon them) were given this miracle that when they used to offer or sacrifice anything in the Name of Allah Almighty, at that time a fire (from heaven) used to devour that particular thing. That devouring of the thing by the fire was considered a sign of acceptance of the offering or sacrifice by Allah Almighty. An event which belonged to Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) like this has been recorded in the present Bible. The Jews caught an evasion from it and said to the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) that Allah Almighty has told them that they should not believe in that Prophet (peace be upon him), who does not have this miracle.

It was a false evasion of the Jews. There was no order of this type in any Scripture. Neither it exists today, nor can it be proved in respect of every Prophet (peace be upon him). Allah Almighty has bestowed the miracle to each Prophet (peace be upon him) separately, which were suitable according to his circumstances respectively. Therefore, Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) said to the Jews, “If you are true to your promise and you do not believe in any Prophet (peace be upon him) till the time that you do not see this miracle in to him, then tell me ‘why did you slay those ancient Prophets (peace be upon them), who had brought the miracles of their truth, and they had also this specific miracle? The condition, which is being stipulated by you, that is only a pretense and trick”.

Allah Almighty satisfied His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) that he should not be sad and sorrowful due to those people’s absurd reasoning and perverseness. Many Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) were sent before you, who were falsified by the people.

Commentary

Another shameless villainy of the Jews has been described in this verse. Firstly, they did not use to spend in the Way of Allah Almighty due to hoarding. Secondly, whenever they heard the order to spend for the cause of Allah Almighty, they rallied upon it and became arrogant of Allah Almighty. When the verse “Man  zallazii  yuq-ri-zUllaaha qar-zan  hasanaaa” (Who is he, who will lend money to Allah without interest, which will be repaid at the pleasure of the borrower) revealed, they said, “Does Allah borrow from us? If it is so, then Allah is beggar and poor (Allah forbid), and we are rich and independent.

It needs some close attention here that Allah Almighty named as loan to the money, which will be spent in the good works. Doing so, He proved His perfect Mercy and Kindness. He causes to bear the spending money (which has already been bestowed by Him to us) for our own welfare. He will not get any profit or gain while we shall be spending, then how can it be called “Loan”? It is only His Beneficence that He promises to pay us best retaliation/remuneration against our spending money for our own welfare and names this thing as loan. But the Jews began to get it as a joke due to their wickedness instead of accepting it as Allah’s Kindness and prated such foolish talk in the Dignity of Allah Almighty. He commands that He has heard these saying and He shall punish them on their arrogance.

They had been slaying the innocent and sinless Prophets (peace be upon them). As they have spoken rude words on the Superiority of Allah Almighty, likewise they presumed in the dignity of Prophets also. Because of this reason, they deserved punishment of burning Fire of the Hell.

Commentary

Primary part of Surah ‘Aali ‘Imraan explains about the circumstances of the People of the Scripture, (the Jews and the Christians). The event of the Battle of ‘Uhud  had been described in the midst of these lessons to disclose the condition of Hypocrites. Now from here, the mention about the People of the Scripture has begun again, because the Jews used to become cause of more harmful to the Muslims and most of the Hypocrites also belonged to this creed.

Allah Almighty commands that those Hypocrites out of the Jews, who escape from the expedition for Islam, they also shirk from spending their wealth in the Way of Allah Almighty. But as it is not in their favor to get rein for some days in the world due to evading from the religious war, in such a manner, hoarding by stinginess cannot be useful for them. On the Day of Resurrection, this treasure, which they have collected by hoarding, shall become their collar in the form of torment.

The Muslims have also been warned that they should not slip away from paying Zakaat (the poor-due) and other necessary expenditures in the path of religion. Otherwise, the person, who will adopt the custom of Hypocrites by hoarding, he also will be punished in the same manner. It has come in the Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), that those persons, who do not pay Zakaat, their treasures will be put in their collars like a frightful large serpent.

Allah Almighty has told a determined truth that, “Allah’s is the heritage of the heavens and the earth”. After death, you will leave every thing in this world. Therefore, every thing will remain in the possession of Allah Almighty. If any person spends for the cause (in the Way) of Allah Almighty, then yours will be a vast reward. Allah Almighty knows intentions and deeds of every body. He recognizes that who is hoarder and who is generous. He will grant retaliation according to the deeds. So, every person should spend with stout heart in the Path of Allah Almighty.

Commentary

It was described in the previous verse that which more rein of prosperity has been given to the Infidels, that is not a proof that they have become graceful near Allah Almighty. Now it is being explained, “It is not true also that the Muslims have suffered from disasters and unpleasant incidents, therefore they have incurred displeasure of Allah Almighty. Actually, Allah Almighty does not desire to keep the Muslims always in their present condition, in which state they remained till then”. That is to say, many Infidels used to play the game of hypocrisy in the cloak of Muslim-hood. They have been staying on infidelity while they used to recite ‘Kalimah’ (the Muslim confession of faith), “Laa ‘ilaaha ‘illAllaahu, Muhammad-ur-RasuulUllaah” {There is no (other God) but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger} (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) by their tongues. And they remained mixed up with the Muslims to deceive them. Moreover, Allah Almighty produced such circumstances to save the Muslims from the deception of Hypocrites due to which it might be distinguished between the pure and the impure, and separated the good from the wicked.

Although, it was very easy for Allah Almighty to disclose the names of Hypocrites without putting the entire Muslims in trial, but it is not suitable according to the philosophy and wisdom of Allah Almighty, that He manifest such concealed matters to the entire people. However, He chooses Messengers/Prophets out of the mankind for this purpose and teaches them knowledge of mysteries as much as He wishes.

It also appears from this verse that the knowledge of mysteries is not delivered directly to the entire people, but only to the Prophets and Messengers, (peace be upon them). You have to Believe in the Word of Allah Almighty (Holy Qur’an), Sayings of His last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and choose the life of sobriety. If you did so, then consider it as you have gotten every thing. Then there will be great reward for you”.

177.  Those who purchase disbelief at the price of faith harm Allah not at all, and theirs will be a painful doom.

178.  And let not those who disbelieve imagine that the rein We give them bodeth good unto their souls. We only give them rein that they may grow in sinfulness. And theirs will be a shameful doom.

numlii  lahum   khayrul-li-‘an-fusihim.  ‘Innamaa  numlii  lahum  li-yaz-daaduuu’ismaa.  Wa  lahum  ‘azaabum-muhiin.

Commentary

‘Ash-taraw – (they purchased), it also means ‘to sell as well as to purchase’ but here it aims to purchase. That is to say, they left Belief and Faith, and chose infidelity and disbelief.

Muhiin – (shameful, wretched), this word has been derived from the word ‘ahaanat, which means insult, disgrace, suffering shame or dishonor. Our Lord Almighty! Save the entire Believers and Muslims from this kind of torment.

Before these verses, Satan and the devils were being discussed that they plan to frighten the Believers by their different vicious and terrifying managements, but it is compulsory for the Believers that they should not have any fear in their hearts except Allah Almighty. The devils run easily to infidelity, disbelief and insurrection leaving Faith and Islam. Their attempts of this type do never injure Allah Almighty.

Noor-e-Khuda hae kufr ki harkat pe khanda zan
Phoonkuun se yeh charaagh, bujhaya na jae ga

(The Light of God is smiling on the act of infidelity
This lamp would never be extinguished with blows)

Now it is being commanded again that those people have purchased infidelity and disbelief at the price of faith. Doing so, they can never harm Allah Almighty, His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) or His religion. Contrary to this, they will suffer the painful doom. If Allah Almighty has given them some rein, then they should not be proud that this rein bodes well for their souls. The rein of punishment is not favorable for them. But Allah Almighty gives them rein only that they may grow in sinfulness. Moreover, they will be fallen into a shameful doom.

Yukhaw-wifu  - (he frightens, terrifies), that is to say; the fear and concern about the future. Devilish temptations perplex and make the human being anxious always about his future. The words takhaa-fuuhum and  khaafuuNi  in this lesson have been derived from the word ‘Khawf’ which means fear and fright.

‘Awli-yaaa-‘ahuu – (his partisans, his friends, his helpers and his supporters). Singular of this word is walii. Because of suitableness of this word’s meanings, the pious and good persons are called ‘awli-yaaa-‘Allaah.

Yusaari-‘uuna – (they run easily), it means, “they make haste, hasten.

Allah Almighty commands that the person who wants to inspire the awe about your enemy through spreading the false news, is disciple of the Devil and mislead by Satan. His aim is to frighten you by inspiring with their awe. Therefore, do not fear them if you have faith (you are truly Believers). Allah Almighty affirmed, “You have proved practically that you do not fear the Devil. So, do never fear these devils, but fear Me only. Hypocrites run unto disbelief because of his false news, for lo!  They injure Allah not at all; let not their conduct grieve you. Neither they can damage anything which belongs to the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), nor they can harm the Religion of Allah Almighty, but they have been harming themselves only. It is Allah’s Will to assign them no portion in the Hereafter as retaliation of their hypocrisy, and an awful doom has been waiting for them on the Doomsday.

Commentary

Messenger of Allah Almighty reached the place named ‘Hamraa’ul ‘Asad’ with the Army of Muslim crusaders to follow Abu Sufiyan. Distance of this place is eight miles from Madinah. When Abu Sufiyan heard that the Muslims have been following him, his heart was terrified severely. He postponed the idea of attack and ran away towards Makkah. Occasionally a body of traders of Abdul Qais was proceeding to MadinahAbu Sufiyan excited them by enticing something to remove his humiliation; that they should announce such news after reaching Madinah, as hearing that news the Muslims would be overawed and frightened. The people of that caravan began to say after reaching Madinah that, ‘The people of Makkah have prepared a very huge Army to ruin the Muslims’. Hearing this news, excitement of faith increased in the hearts of Muslims more than earlier instead of fearing, and they began to say after listening to the state of Infidels’ Army, “Allah is sufficient for us opposite to the entire world! Most Excellent is He in Whom we trust”. These feelings of the Muslims and their rewards have been described in this verse.

Another narrative exists also in connection with the reason of revelation of these verses. That is, “At the end of the Battle of ‘UhudAbu Sufiyan announced that the battle will be fought again next year at the place of Badr. You should be ready”. The Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) accepted this challenge. When the next year came, he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) commanded the people to come out for Jihad (religious crusade).

On the other side, Abu Sufiyan left Makkah with his Army. He traveled some distance but lost his courage and as he heard the preparation of the Muslims, their awe prevailed over him. Therefore, he wanted to go back to Makkah and evade regarding famine but he thought that it should be dealt with a plan that the Muslims should be blamed. By chance, a person was proceeding towards MadinahAbu Sufiyan tempted him for anything and said, “Announce such news after reaching Madinah, because of which the Muslims be frightened and they do not come out for war”. This person reached Madinah and began to announce the news that the people of Makkah have collected very large number of Army and it would not be better for the Muslims to fight against them. But Allah Almighty strengthened the intentions of Muslims. They said, “Allah is sufficient for us”. Eventually, the Muslims reached the battlefield of Badr according to the promise but the Infidels did not arrive for fighting. A very heavy market used to establish there. Therefore, the Muslims remained there for three days, earned very well profit in trade and returned to Madinah.

Commentary

An incident has been described as the aim of sending these verses:

During the Battle of ‘Uhud, the Muslims slumbered and then they stopped against the enemy being refreshed. A very furious fight took place in the battlefield. After suffering a defeat, the Idolaters of Makkah ran away. Abu Sufiyan was chieftain of that Army. He stopped in the way while they were returning to Makkah and thought in his heart, “We have made a big mistake that we have left the Muslims who were defeated and injured. It was better that they would have been finished today”. They began to consult one another and finalized, “Let’s go back to Madinah and finish the Muslims”.

When the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) heard this news that Abu Sufiyan was thinking to attack on the Muslims again, he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) publicized in Madinah, “Get those people ready to follow the enemy today, who were our colleagues yesterday in the battlefield of ‘Uhud”.

The Muslim crusaders had been injured severely in the battlefield. They had been wounded deadly. Apparently, they did not have strength to fight now. But listening to the call of God’s Apostle (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allah Almighty be upon him), they got ready immedieately. Allah Almighty has mentioned about those good servants in this verse.

Having too much wounds on their bodies, the Crusaders of Islam did not confuse in their minds, prepared themselves without any delay upon one call of the Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). For such good-natured and abstinent of them, there is great reward.
