Lesson – 36 Second Likeness of the Hypocrites

Lesson – 36

 Second Likeness of the Hypocrites

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)
Stage – 1, Verse – 19a of 286, Section – 2 of 40 (Part - 1)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

19a.  Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder and the flash of lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears by reason of the thunder-claps, for fear of death.
19a.  ‘Aw kasayyi-bim-minas-samaaa-‘i  fiihi zulumaatunw- wa ra’-dunw- wa barq. Yaj-‘aluuna ’asaabi-‘ahum fiii  ‘aa-zaani-him- minas-sawaa-‘iqi ha-zaral-mawt.

Lesson

Kasayyi-bin – (Like a rainstorm), this word has come out from suub, which means “cloud or coming down of the rain”.

As-samaaa-‘i – (The skies), it has been derived from samu, which means “elevation, exaltation”. Every such thing which is at height whether that is clouds or skies, are included in it.

As we have discussed in a previous lesson that there are two kinds of hypocrites, first type of the people, who are severe enemies of Islam heartily but apparently they claim that they are Muslims. their likeness has passed in lesson # 34.

In this verse, second type of hypocrites is being explained. They neither enter in Islam wholeheartedly and nor give it up; due to their weak temperament. But they remain immersed in doubt and perplexity, and can’t decide altogether. Likeness of this kind of hypocrites is given with heavy rains. There are uncountable benefits in it. Barren land becomes fertile, crops begin to bloom, canals and stream-lets begin to flow. But along with it, there is thunder of clouds; which causes to tremble the hearts, and the flash of lightening also, which causes the eyes to be purblind. Very dark darkness spreads over everywhere. But still; despite these happenings, none is enemy of the rains.

Islam also came entirely with blessing like rains but there are some difficulties and restrictions too with it like prayer, fasting, paying the poor-due (Zakaah), pilgrimage, try and strive (Jihad) and other commands of Allah Almighty. The Hypocrites neglect and fear from these restrictions.

Whenever these people used to see advantages of Islam, they ran towards it but when the time came to sacrifice, they turned back. Would that they had abandoned their doubts, adopted one way and connected with Islam.

Lesson – 35 The End of the Hypocrites

Lesson – 35

 The End of the Hypocrites

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)
Stage – 1, Verse – 18 of 286, Section – 2 of 40 (Part - 1)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

18.    Deaf, dumb and blind,
and they return not.
18.   Summum-  bukmun ‘umyun  fahum  laa  yarji-‘uun.

Lesson

Summun – (Deaf; hard of hearing; inattentive). Singular of this word is ‘asam, which means “a deaf”. Although, the Hypocrites were not deaf apparently, but they were called deaf, because, they used to hear the true advice of Islam and reject it. They listened and showed that they have not listened; as if they were deaf and did not listen.

Bukmun – (Dumb; speechless; mute). This word is singular of ‘abkum, which means a dumb. Although they had tongues but turned away from asking the true advice and did not accept the Truth, as though they were dumb and had not tongue in their mouths.

‘Umyun -    (Blind; unable to see) (plural of Aa’-maa). It means blind people. They were called blind because, having their eyes; they had seen the Signs of Allah Almighty but didn’t accept.

In this verse; the End of the deeds of hypocrites has been explained. Notwithstanding; after appearing the Light of Islam, they still adopted the darkness of infidelity. Due to worldly benefits, personal desires and carnal wishes, they didn’t distinguish among good and bad. As according to the natural rule, if the hand is put in fire, it burns, similarly, because of their perversity and intentionally depravity, their entire capabilities of recognizing the Truth were lost.  Infidelity came over them. They were deprived of the Light of Islam. Allah Almighty snatched the Light because of their evil deeds and they began to go astray in darkness.

It was compulsory result of distinguishing not between good and bad that, having ears they were unable to hear the Voice of the Truth. Their tongues became dumb due to asking not about the right path from someone. Their eyes became blind due to looking not the Light of Islam. And Revelations of God Almighty didn’t affect them.

There are three apparent ways of acquiring knowledge: ear, tongue and eye. Sometime a man obtains knowledge of some things by listening, sometime by asking from someone and sometimes he looks other things with his eyes. But a hypocrite loses his these three powers due to his obstinacy and stubbornness. And then, neither he hears the sound of any Guide, nor asks about true knowledge and nor gets any influence by observing the Signs of the Truth. And now there is no hope of his returning from infidelity to Islam or from darkness to the Light.

Lesson – 34 First likeness of the Hypocrites

Lesson – 34

 First likeness of the Hypocrites

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)
Stage – 1, Verse – 17 of 286, Section – 2 of 40 (Part - 1)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

17.   Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindleth fire, and when it sheddeth its light around him Allah taketh away their light and leaveth them in darkness, where they cannot see.
17.   Masaluhum  kamasa-lillazistaw qada naaraa. Falammaaa  ‘azaaa-’at  maa hawlahuu  zahabAllaahu  bi-nuurihim  wa  tarakahum fii zulumaatil-laa  yubsiruun.

Lesson

Masaluhum – (Their likeness). Likeness means such an old famous event which corresponds to any present event and due to its fame, the people may understand it quickly and it becomes helpful also for explanation of the present event.

Zulumaat  - (darkness), this word is plural of zulmat.

During the times of Holy Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), there were two kinds of Hypocrites:

·         Those, who were the vital enemies of Islam, but they used to claim verbally that they were supporters and protecting friends of the Muslims.

·         Those Hypocrites, who were weak due to their temperament and were neither absolutely supporters of Islam, nor they opposed Islam. In which side they used to find their advantage, turned themselves to that direction.

Holy Qur'aan has give likenesses of these both kinds of hypocrites. In this verse, likeness of first kind of hypocrites is being explained.

Likeness of these people is like a man, who lit the fire in the darkness of the night. From the light of that fire, all things around him became bright and he became able to recognize the difference among profitable and harmful things. But suddenly, God Almighty snatched his eye-sight. And now he cannot see anything while surroundings of him are bright. Just like blinds, he is wandering hither and thither and cannot reap advantage of the Brightness.

This likeness is fit on the Hypocrites. Before Islam, they were lying in the darkness of the infidelity; there was no distinction between good and bad for them. Then the Candle of Islam was enlightened and they began to reap advantage from it, but suddenly, all opportunities, which they were availing due to Islam, were snatched. Their original face came before the Muslims. And they did not remain able to deceive the Muslims. Some of them leaned towards evil by giving up the Truth at their own and some were forfeited to get advantage from the Light of Islam due to their personal means. The light of Islam became useless for them in these three conditions and the darkness spread everywhere.

Lesson – 33 Misguidance and deficit

Lesson – 33

 Misguidance and deficit

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)
Stage – 1, Verse – 16 of 286, Section – 2 of 40 (Part - 1)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

16.  These are they who purchase
error at the price of guidance, so their commerce doth not prosper, neither are they guided.
16.  ‘Ulaaa-‘ikallazii-nashtara-wuz-zalaalata  bilhudaa:  famaa rabihat-tijaaratuhum  wa  maa kaanuu  muhtadiin.

Lesson

‘Ishtaraw – (They purchased), to get a thing exchanged with the other. This word is used for the both ‘buying’ and ‘selling’. Hypocrites had option of choice to accept either Belief or otherwise. But they chose the way of infidelity and hypocrisy.

Maa rabihat – (Did not prosper).

The consequence of hypocrisy has been stated in this lesson that these people went astray leaving the path of Guidance. That is to say; that excellence of the humanity, which is a source of Guidance from Allah Almighty, due to which, every human being can acquire goodness and comfort of perpetual Life, these hypocrites extinguished that Light of the humanity. And which Guidance they had to attain, they rejected it and produced bad habits into themselves and evil manners. And they thought themselves that they had tried to strike a good bargain, by saying verbally that God is One and keeping infidelity in their hearts. And they were glad on it that how is this good wonderful bargaining?

God Almighty commands that they are losers in this bargaining. They reaped casual and sensual, destroy-able advantages, by passing their entire life for this purpose. It were good business if they had achieved the comfort of their perpetual Lives, by spending their wealth and sacrificing casual lives in the Way of God Almighty. But they have destroyed also their real capital.

This straying and lose of hypocrites is the result of their deeds, which has been discussed in the previous verses (lessons), that verbally they say: We believe in Allah and in the Day of Resurrection, whereas they do not believe, but wish to deceive God Almighty and the Believers. The disease of infidelity and hypocrisy is in their hearts. They create disturbance in the name of correctness, and consider that the sincere people and the believers are stupid. They assure them that they are believers and cooperative, but when they join their bad character companions and leaders, then they are theirs’.

Lesson – 32 Mocking by the Hypocrites

Lesson – 32

 Mocking by the Hypocrites

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)
Stage – 1, Verses – 14 & 15 of 286, Section – 2 of 40 (Part - 1)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

14. And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe; and when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! We are with you; verily we did but mock.

15. Allah (Himself) doth mock them, leaving them to wander blindly on in their contumacy.
14.  Wa  ‘izaa  laqul-laziina ‘aamanuu  qaaluu  ‘aamannaa. Wa    ‘izaa  khalaw  ‘ilaa shayaatiini-him,  qaaluu  ‘innaa ma-‘akum,  ‘innamaa nahnu mus-tahzi-‘uun.

15. ‘Allaahu  yas-tahzi-‘u  bi-him wa yamuddu-hum  fii tug-yaanihim  ya’-mahuun.

Lesson

Shayaatiini-him – (Their Devils), the word ‘Shaytaan’ has very vast meanings in Arabic language. Mischievous and contumacious people are also called Devils. It is applied on those entire human beings and demons (ghosts) who have the nature of devils. In this verse ‘Shayaatiini-him’ means the Leaders of the Hypocrites who had become devils due to their mischief and contumacy.

Mus-tahzi-‘uun – (We mock), this word is from ‘istah-zaa’, which means to deride, to mock.

Tug-yaanihim – (in their contumacies), this word has been derived from ta-gaa. The origin of the word tug-yaani is also the same. It means “to deviate from a prescribed limit”. Here it aims “crossing the limit in insolence”.

Ya’-mahuun –  (wandering blindly). This word has been made from the word ‘amah, which means “blindness”. Here it means the condition of a person, in which, he may not see the straight path and wanders hither and thither blindly.

Another stubbornness of the Hypocrites is being described in this verse that they used to practice bidirectional tricks, and deceive the people. When they used to meet the Muslims, for deceiving them and winning their favor, say, “We believed also”. But when they used to go nigh their leaders in solitude, say: “We are with you, we make the Muslims foolish. They are foolish and simpletons. They tell their secrets considering us true and inform about their intentions and plans.”

Replying them, Allah Almighty turned their mock back to them.

Following proverb may be applied here, “Tit for tat” or “As you sow, so you shall reap”. God Almighty has left them in so much worst condition that they have been wandering blindly in their contumacy and struggling in the dark without Light of the Holy Qur’aan

Lesson – 31 Stupidity of the Hypocrites

Lesson – 31

 Stupidity of the Hypocrites

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)
Stage – 1, Verse – 13 of 286, Section – 2 of 40 (Part - 1)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

13.  And when it is said unto them: Believe as the people believe, they say: shall we believe as the foolish believe? Beware! They indeed are the foolish but they know not.
13.  Wa ‘izaa qiila lahum  ‘aa-minuu kamaaa ‘aamanan-naasu  qaa-luuu ‘a-nu’-minu kamaaa  ’aa-manas-sufahaaa’.  ‘Alaaa ‘innahum  hu-mu-sufahaaa-‘u   wa laakil-laa  ya’-lamuun.

‘An-naas - (The people), with the use of ‘al this word indicates towards the particular people, who believe, and do not deceive anyone in the matter of faith.

As-sufahaaa’ -  (The foolish), this word is plural of safiiha, which has been derived from safaha. It means levity, lightness, because foolishness is due to decrements of wisdom and sense, so it aims the people, who are known as foolish, stupid, silly or nonsense.

Another habit of the Hypocrites is being discussed in this verse. When they are asked to believe, as the true Muslims believe whole heartily with purity and sincerity, they reply, “Shall we believe as the foolish believe? As it were; the Believers are foolish according to their opinion. According to the Hypocrites, the Muslims want to excel the Truth over a great majority of the infidelity, which is entirely impossible.

The Hypocrites of Madinah were very proud due to their power and strength. They had faith that the poor, strangers and refugee Muslims would not be able to stay against them. They used to think that Islam is a game for a few days, which will be over automatically. So the people, who are entering into it, are indolent from its end and careless from their benefits.

Answering to their so saying, God Almighty commands, “Beware! They indeed are the foolish but they know not”, because the Truth however, will overcome. And the deceiver hypocrites will suffer forever.

It is known from this verse that the Hypocrites do not believe in the Day of Resurrection. So there is much need of providence to believe in the Day of Resurrection. Some volume of the pleasures of this world would have to be given up for the ease of the next life, which will begin immediately after death, believing in the Doomsday. Hypocrites do not think about the End. They remain careless from that gain and loss, which will be forever in the next life. So they are the foolish and blockhead.

Lesson – 30 Felonious conduct of the Hypocrites

Lesson – 30

 Felonious conduct of the Hypocrites

Surah ‘Al-‘Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)
Stage – 1, Verses – 111 & 12 of 286, Section – 2 of 40 (Part - 1)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

11. And when it is said unto
them: Make not mischief in the earth, they say: We are peace-makers only.

12. Beware! They indeed are the mischief-makers, but they perceive not.
11. Wa ‘izaa qiila lahum laa tuf-siduu fil-‘arzi, qaaluuu ‘in-namaa nahnu  muslihuun

12. ‘Alaaa  ‘innahum  humul-mufsi-duuna  walaakil-laa yash-‘uruun.

Lesson

Laa tuf-siduu – (Make not mischief), this word has come out from the word Fasaad - (Quarrel; riot; disturbance; rebellion; war; sedition; mutiny etc.). Here the meanings of “Make not mischief” are the wicked deeds which interrupt in the system. When these circumstances become usual, these interrupt in the world peace and the system of the universe. Fasaad is the biggest crime according to the teachings of Islam.

Muslihuun – (Peace-makers). This word has been derived from the word Salaah, which is opposite to Fasaad. With ‘Fasaad’ the system is damaged and with ‘Salaah’ the system is corrected.

Another worst mischievous cleverness of the Hypocrites is being disclosed in this verse. Remaining firm on any other false manner besides the Divine’s Law, and preaching for it is a big crime. And the Hypocrites use to do it. Now, they have started spreading Fasaad also including the creation of mismanagement. Behind the screen, conspiracy and showing themselves as friends; and the enmity became their habit. The Heart disease overcame the Hypocrites so much that they forgot distinction among good and bad. Whenever they are instructed not to make mischief with this mode of their acts in the country, they say, “We are peace-makers only. But indeed, they are mischief-makers. How is it a big mischief that the Infidels begin to suppose due to their hypocrisy that there is no excellence/beauty in Islam because being Muslims, these people are still involved in the evils. On the other hand, they tempt the Muslims by deceiving. They claim themselves that they are Muslims but have not fear of God in their hearts. Due to such behavior of theirs, there is a risk that others will also forget God-Fearing.

It is found that good behavior grows among the people with the Truth, which becomes cause of peace-making in the world. And the hypocrisy interrupts in the management of the world. When a person reaches this stage and does not understand his weakness, then the ruin seizes him. His wisdom and internal perception ends.
