Commentary

Jaahid – (Oppose, Strive against), it is a word of command from the word Jihad. Meanings of Jihad have already been explained in the past (to try and strive). It has been commanded in this verse that you should strive against the Disbelievers and the Hypocrites.

To strive against someone is a particular form of common Jihad, that is to say; trying best for the purpose that the opponent should refrain, all at once or consequently, from those actions and deeds which are hazardous for the humanity.

In this verse, it is commanded that you should deal the Disbelievers and the Hypocrites hard, that is to say; you should not compromise with them, but be harsh.

In Islam, atmosphere of mutual friendship and politeness surrounds all around. In it, every individual is a standard-bearer of bilateral forgiveness and hospitality. And Messenger of God Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) desired to establish this environment in the Arabian territory and through the Arabs, in the entire world by means of His Commands and Behavior.

But many crooked people of the Arab did not let this system establish in the beginning and opposed. Even that the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) was instructed by means of the Revelation that there is a need of predominance on stubborn people by influence and fighting.

Therefore, it is commanded that these obstinate Disbelievers, who are open enemies of Islam, will not accept in this manner. They become more courageous for committing mischief due to more loosening. Be harsh with them from all around, so that they remain influenced.

And the Hypocrites do not fight openly, so there is no change of war against them. But prove with your behavior that they are the worst stubborn people. Their punishment is the Fire of the Hell on the Day of Resurrection, which is the end of a hapless journey and which is a very bad abode.

Ever-Blessed Dwellings in Gardens of Eden - Quran Chapter 9 – 72 (Pt-10, Stg-2) (L-1215) - درس قرآن

Ever-Blessed Dwellings in Gardens of Eden

Chapter Tawbah (Repentance) – Surah – 9)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

72.  Allah promiseth to the believers, men and women, Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide for ever - blessed dwellings in Gardens of Eden. And – greater (far)! – acceptance from Allah. That is supreme triumph.
72.  Wa-‘adAllaahul-Mu’-miniina  wal-Mu’-minaati  Jannaatin-  tajrii  min  tahti-hal-‘anhaaru  khaali-diina  fiihaa  wa  masaa-kina  tayyi-baatan-  fii  jannaati  ‘Adn.  Wa  Riz-waanummi-nAllaahi  ‘akbar.  Zaalika  huwal-faw-zul-‘aziim.

Commentary

‘Adnin – (dwelling place, abode), Eden is the place, house, lodging or room, which is someone’s own permanent abode or residence, not any hotel, inn or temporary staying or dwelling place. A mankind feels pleasure at such time when the place of rest and ease is; of one’s own. Otherwise, none can get comfort or pleasure for ever in hotels and inns.

It is commanded that the true Believers of God Almighty (men and women) have determined strongly that they will dwell in the world according to the Commands of Allah Almighty and Sayings of His Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), and made up their minds that they will never commit any such work, which is not allowed in accordance with the Divine’s Law.

They have intended: We shall help one another mutually in good works, enjoin the right, forbid the wrong, establish the worship of Allah Almighty timely and according to prescribed manners, pay regularly the poor-due (Zakaat) for supporting the poor and needy people, and we shall remain ready every time to sacrifice our wealth and lives to abide by the Commands of God Almighty and His Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam).

It is obvious that for acting upon this program, they would have to give up many worldly amusements, recreations and long runs, from which there is no good result but only waste of time. Moreover, those are so much attractive things that many people of good sense are allured.

Remuneration for Believers against all these things will be that they will be provided luxuriant, shady and fresh-blooming Gardens for ever, which will never be ceased from them, and in those Gardens, there will be permanent abode for them, not temporarily. For their dwelling, there will be clean and neat rooms and palaces, and the biggest prize for them will be that Allah Almighty will assure them: I am pleased with you and I am happy.

There is no prosperity and success above this. And it is the remuneration of believing without wrangling and get ready in all sorts for obeying the Commands of God Almighty and His Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), which is easy to say but performing is as much difficult that there is no difficult work in the world than it, if the heart is not truly fond of it.

Commentary

Characteristics of the Hypocrites and fixed punishments for them were explained, so now, on the contrary to them, the characteristics of the Believers and the distinguishing gifts for them are being described.

It is commanded that the Believers, whether they are men or women, they all have a particular characteristic mutually that they are protecting friends, condolatory and supporters one of another. They enjoin for those works, which are beneficial for the entire mankind, but forbid from those works, which lead the human beings unto the disasters. They remember God Almighty every time. And for God’s remembrance, they establish congregational prayer. They are not niggards; but pay the prescribed portion of their wealth as poor-due for the help of the needy and indigent people. They neither rebel, nor transgress and nor disobey, but bow their heads before the commands of God Almighty and His Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam).

In short, every habit of the Believers is opposite to the Hypocrites. Therefore, certainly their consequence will also be totally opposite to them. God Almighty cursed the Hypocrites, whereas He will be Merciful on the Believers. Allah Almighty is Omnipotent and He will requite every individual according to personal (good or evil) deeds.

The Hypocrites were warned that they might not be saved from the wrath of God Almighty, because they know the consequence of the people like them have passed away before them. Therefore, they should learn from their circumstances. At the end, the Believers have been informed: You will be rewarded surely for that lifestyle which you adopted during your life time. In addition, the biggest reward for you will be that God Almighty will be content from you. And you will be away from His wrath and curse for ever.

Commentary

God Almighty commanded in the previous verse that condition of   habitual negligence of the Hypocrites and being entangled only in pleasantness of this life by them, is the same as of those disobedient people, who were before them. Whereas, how much portion of the world has been given to them, certainly that is very less than that, which was given to those who passed away before them. But lifestyle of these people is the same as of those. Considering that only this world is everything, and their thinking that “being entangled in the temporal confusions is the actual gain of life” is just like those people who have passed away.

Ultimately, they should think about the consequence of ancient people. How they have become fearless from it that they may also suffer from disasters as the old people suffered. In this verse, the intention has been drawn particularly unto those special nations, which belonged to former times.

It is commanded: How is it possible that these people would not have known the circumstances of those nations, which have elapsed in the countries around their country. The folk of Noah (peace be upon him) rebelled and they were ruined by a storm of water. The people of Aad were proud and arrogant, so they were destroyed by wind-storm. The Thamud became obstinate; therefore they were killed by an unseen scream. The folk of Madian, who are also called “As-haabul Aykah” fell with the face down by earthquake and thundering sound.

Stories of all above mentioned people were discussed in Surah ‘A’-raaf and further description will come about them in the next lessons also. Mu’-tafikaat is name of villages of the folk of Lot. Land of those people was overthrown and stones were rained over them.

Allah Almighty commands that those people were ruined due to their habitual negligence and intransigence. We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. The Hypocrites should fear “whether their resurrection may not be like them”.

Commentary

It was indicated in the previous verses that the people should learn from the circumstances of those who have passed off from this world. In this verse, it has been described that behavior and condition of the both (the people who are existing now and those who have departed), is equal.

It is commanded that those people who were before you, they enjoyed according to their wishes with that which they had, and they did never think about the result. Now you should behold yourselves that; what have you been doing? The things which have come in your portion are not more than of them. They were physically stronger than you. More property, assets and wealth of the world they possessed than you.

Having everything less than them, you have been celebrating merriment like them, being ignorant and intoxicated. Your character is the same as of those people. They had forgotten God Almighty and His Omnipotence being intoxicated in their power, strength, property and wealth. Like them, you have also been entangled in the worldly matters and do not care for the Cause of Allah Almighty.

Then, you observed: What was happened with them? Their strong bodies, wealth and property could not save them from the punishment of God Almighty. Being inferior to them in all these matters, you have also been entangled in the problems of the world like them. Think for a moment! While even excessive worldly things could not save them, then how can these a few things save you from the torment of God Almighty?

Certainly, all deeds, done by them, were of no avail. Neither anything was useful for them in the world and nor on the Day of Resurrection. If you wish to see the people; who have been entangled in loss and scarcity, then observe them. Learn from their circumstances. Correct your character and fear Allah Almighty.
